Making Underwater Robots Communicate with CoreDX DDS: SWARMS Early Trials a Success

November 30, 2016: Successful first on-site trials of the SWARMS (Smart and Networking Underwater Robots in Cooperation Meshes) project were conducted last month in Gran Canaria, Spain.

Facilitating, planning and the executing maritime ‘underwater’ operations can be complex, costly and difficult to manage. The SWARMS project aims to expand the use of underwater and surface vehicles to facilitate the conception, planning, and execution of maritime and offshore operations. In doing so, SWARMS will ultimately reduce operational costs, improve safety, and help to make autonomous maritime and offshore operations a viable option for new and existing markets.

Incorporating CoreDX DDS communications middleware into the design, engineers are able to develop intelligent, integrated platforms, allowing the underwater robots to communicate and share functionalities. CoreDX DDS improves autonomy, robustness, cost effectiveness, and reliability of operations, allowing management of the sea environment from the workplace.

Video of the initial trial in the Mediterranean Sea can be viewed here.

Further on-site trials and testing are planned for June 2017, this time in the Black Sea.
